Journey to Silver: Part 1

I adore League of Legends. I started playing in 2010, when Boyfriend thought it’d be a good game for us to play while we were apart over my college Thanksgiving break.

I was TERRIBLE back then. I’m still comparatively terrible now, but then I played with camera lock, didn’t use a mouse, and couldn’t even stay alive against beginner bots.

I spent time away from the game for about 2 years, playing World of Warcraft mostly. It wasn’t until Season 4 that I actually began playing again and started to really see improvement in my play. That’s when I started playing ranked.

I was atrocious in ranked placements, but somehow managed to make it to Silver 5. To make a long story short, I’ve played much less ranked than is required to actually climb, and was placed in Bronze 5 in Season 5 and again in Season 6, despite a 5-5 placement ratio.

My goal this season is simply to make it to Silver.

I actually started recording my games this season recently, to be able to look back on what I did wrong and mindfully figure out how to not make those same mistakes again in future games. It’s also nice when my recordings capture an awesome moment, like a three-person shockwave on Orianna that causes all three people caught in it to flash. I don’t play enough ranked to climb fast, but I am happy to have climbed to Bronze 4 so far and haven’t fallen back down yet.

The first games after my placements were crazy. It felt like I was with the worst of the worst of the League community – both skillwise and attitude-wise. People were yelling at each other, flaming, and doing absolutely atrocious plays and dying left and right. I think after my placements I lost at least 6-7 games in a row. I just kept going, figuring I’d have to win sometime. Then, I started to gain LP and climb through the tier. It was like something just clicked into place, and I actually won my first promotional series ever, and celebrated my promotion into Bronze 4 by dancing in my chair a bunch. I’ve stuck to mostly three champions – Ezreal and Lucian for bot lane and Orianna for mid. I feel that it is going to be easier this season too, since you only NEED to know two roles rather than all of them (jungling randomly in past seasons was NOT fun). I enjoy that I am good at and enjoy playing champions that are not banned often and mostly aren’t picked away from me.

As I reach each threshold, I am reminding myself not to be discouraged. I know that after that losing streak at the beginning, if I just keep playing the climb will continue. Right now, I’m in a ranked bounce house – I’ll lose one, win one, lose one, win two, lose two, and stay at approximately 50% winrate consistently. I know that eventually I will fix something that I’m doing wrong (or will get really lucky with my teams) and I’ll continue to climb from here. I still have until Worlds to climb to Silver 5 at minimum.

For me, having something that I like to do competitively is a new thing. I have never been competitive, not liking sports games and people worried so much about winning. But finding an outlet where I can compete and improve my own gameplay and mechanical skill is incredibly satisfying to do, which keeps me going back, wanting to play at least one game per day, if not more. It makes me want to read each patch notes as they come out, searching for changes to my favorite champions. It makes me want to watch professionals stream and learn more from their play as well. And ultimately, I am having fun, which is the most important part.

I will update you on my progress as the season goes on. Please leave any advice, encouragement, or ideas for music to listen to while I play in the comments! πŸ™‚Β

Congratulations on the Bronze 4! I think it is awesome, and I am so happy to read you are liking it, even though it is technically a competition. For all I care, and for me, you finally found a sport you like! Yay!
I Played LoL, not a lot. The farthest I reached was Gold II, and I can tell you that I wish I stayed in Bronze forever. The yelling, cursing, feeding, trolling and loligagging take on a much more atrocious form the higher you go. So, my advice is Enjoy the Bronze!!!! And try Braum! Besides being super-adorable (or maybe it is just me that always loves the fat male character with a moustache?!) he is an awesome tankish-support, that can easily give you a lead in into changing and trying out new roles. I know that for me, playing anything melle is sometimes still a nightmare. I was always playing ranged and was accustomed to that range being my safe space.
Where do you play at, by the way? I think I was on East Europe. My friends stopped playing LoL and since I started because of them, I breathed a sigh of relief and returned to my truer moba love: Heroes of Newerth πŸ™‚

Oh, I’m sure the trolling/feeding, etc. will not stop the higher I go, but it is sometimes astounding the amount of lollygagging and simply unknowledgeable play that happens, and I can tell that they’re not doing it on purpose, at least. I have a lot of game knowledge, but I struggle with mechanical things like CSing, but that is getting better, at least. Besides, when you start to get 10+ kills in a game CS for that particular game is a little less important.

My boyfriend ADORES Braum. He is a great champion, and I love that all of his skins have a poro in them. πŸ™‚ I play mainly ADC and mid, which is probably punishing myself needlessly but I love Orianna so much and she’s hardly played right now, and Ezreal has become my OTP in the ADC role. I am glad I’ve found champions that even when I lose, I am having fun because I’m playing that champion. I can definitely relate to not knowing how to deal with playing a melee champion, though, since I’m almost always ranged. I used to play Yasuo a lot in mid a couple of seasons ago, but I haven’t in so long I don’t know if I could do it well now, and on the rare occasions I play top lane in normals, I am weirded by taking harass when CSing. Nice thing about Braum though is as support he can take harass and it barely matters, or just shield all the ADC’s attacks. I’ve been in a solo fight with a Braum as Ezreal and I lost. πŸ˜›

I play on NA πŸ™‚ I haven’t really tried any other MOBAs besides Heroes of the Storm, which is okay but I get a little bored with the smaller amount of micro play that happens. It’s a good game though, and I know a lot of people who really enjoy playing it. I’ve never heard of Heroes of Newerth! I’ll have to look it up. πŸ™‚

Ezreal is great, it is my cousin’s favourite hero. We have a lot of fun when he does some crazy ulti kill and leaves the dead opponents flabbergasted πŸ˜€
I think I like Braum even more because of his voiceover. I just love how you pop the shield and he says “STAND BEHIND BRAUM!”. I find it adorable! My husband usually plays the ADC and my younger brother as well, so I kinda stay away from that role. I don’t want 2 princesses nagging how ‘We love it more when YOU support!”
I tried Heroes of the Storm, but I did not like it for several reasons. First, the game lags like crazy. I really appreciate that LoL and HoN both are not requirement heavy and the game is not unplayable because those are not the only things on my hard disk nor do I have a pro gaming PC and laptop (on which again, I have only those games!) Both HotS and Dota 2 for example lag for me. IHotS also has iffy mechanics. I get that it feels a lot easier when you really don’t have to think about GPM and items, and rely solely on talents to give unique or game specific needed play, but at the same time it is meh! I love weird builds, they make for fun games. Sometimes, when you are absolutely losing, it’s fun to just annoy your opponent by making him a sheep, a tornado or similar πŸ™‚
What I like about HoN is that there is no distinct player separation like with LoL servers. It happened to me a lot that my friends had lvl 30 on one server and I on other and we couldn’t be bothered to grind yet another account.

So...what do you think?
